FOR RIDES TO THE SOCCER CENTRE.... If you need a ride to a soccer centre, you MUST sign the list outside of Mr. Chalifoux's room 134 by 2:05 PM in the afternoon so the correct number of taxis can be ordered. ALSO,

ATTENTION: Check out the photo albums of the Friday Tryout, Monday Tryout and this Friday's Exhibition game against the U18 Girls, Tier 1 West Raiders that just came back from the Canadian Nationals.

OPTIONAL - Try to get to some higher level Indoor Soccer games like Major League or Premier League. The games are mostly one touch 'n go and are VERY FAST PACED. They play at all the soccer centres on SUNDAYS. The Premier Men's schedule or the Women's Major Schedule will tell you when and where. Or if you are at a Soccer Centre Monday nights, check out the Div 1 (you might even see some of our guys playing with DFCA or Drillers)

Team members that need a ride should sign-up on the sheet outside of Rm 134. Also, those who will not be able to make it to the games or practices and training sessions should sign the bottom of that sheet stating why they can't make it.  The taxi leaves N.E. Parking lot @3:40PM return by 6:00PM. Shin Pads required.

Game Days and Practice Days...

A practice schedule is posted. Games will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays with more Wednesday games, I think Coach Diaz is looking at 2 practices a week after school. Although details have to be finalized, we are trying to have a practice at the indoor centre always the the day before game day and a second practice or fitness training at school after school on some other day later in the week (perhaps Fridays).  For sure there will be a MANDATORY strategy meeting the day before each game.

TryOuts for this Indoor Co-Ed Soccer team is likely THE MOST COMPETITIVE in the school... the other coaches walk by and are amazed at the turnout.  We have over 70 students trying out for about 20 positions so only about 1 in 4 students will be chosen.  Coach Diaz and Coach Nicolas make the decision on the final roster of 22 players not only on skills but also on who "fits in" as a team player, whether they can remain focused to control their temper and attitude and generally those who are driven enough to give us a winning team. We have many "returning" players from both our Junior and Senior Mens' and Womens' that are talented players. Many of these students are Grade 11 or 12 and some actually have played on the Senior teams since Grade 10. (but that doesn't necessarily guarantee them a spot on the team.

Unfortunately, there is only one Co-ed Team per school (no Senior/Junior or Male/Female individual teams). This is because in our league, other schools have a difficult time finding players and coaches even for ONE indoor team. (We could easily field 2 teams.) There will be a minimum of 8 females and 12 males on the team plus two extras... so 22 players in all. There has to be at least 2 females on the field at all times. Coach Diaz will dress only 15 players (3 complete rotations) and 2 goalies for each game. Who gets to play will be based on the individual athlete's performance, team dynamics, attitudes, attendance at practices and meetings. Coach Diaz made it quite clear at the meeting that "slackers" or those that "can't make it to a practice or meeting because..." won't play. (I know Ian Diaz from club soccer... and he runs a VERY disciplined team and expects top performance and commitment from his athletes. That is why he has taken both youth and adult teams to the Nationals). Anticipated costs and fees are online.

Didn't Make the Team?

Please read the message. Considering the odds from the information above and that all our teams play at the Tier 1 Level, IF YOU DON'T HAPPEN TO BE CHOOSEN FOR THE INDOOR TEAM, YOU MAY STILL BE A VERY TALENTED SOCCER PLAYER. In the spring, we have junior/senior and mens'/womans' teams, so we are able to offer more positions to those players that didn't make this Co-ed Indoor Team.  So we invite all soccer players to come out again in April and tryout for the outdoor teams.

About Overlapping Seasons with Other Sports...

Shep has many elite and highly skilled athletes that perform well in many sports but the difficult decision that these young people have to make is to choose which sport they prefer if there is an overlap of seasons. All of the Ross Shep Tbird teams play at such a high level, it is not fair to the coaches and other team members if one individual spreads themselves out too thinly.  Overlapping seasons with other sports make things difficult. Often some leeway on the part of coaches may be possible, but that is usually initiated by the students and the two coaches involved. Coaches know how important it is to make the selections and get their roster set. But they also know that attendance at practices is vital for maximum team performance. So athletes in this situation have to have an open discussion with the coaches involved. (We especially would like to thank the co-operation of the volleyball / football coaches is releasing their players for our series of tryout scrimmages.)

The seasons for volleyball and football overlap considerably with indoor soccer and they extend for about another month into the indoor soccer season. Often it is longer because Shep is in the playoffs and finals. Basketball is a better fit for the volleyball and footballers, since it starts just as the other two are winding up. Swimming is in total conflict and athletes must make a choice. Indoor Soccer has the same conflicts in the Spring with rugby and outdoor soccer where students must make a choice. Many of our soccer players are able to be full participants in Cross-Country Running (In fact Michelle Holmes, Julian Chalifoux and Kate Wallace were at Canmore for the Provincial Championships) or Track & Field because much of the training can be individual training and not "team" dependent.

Ross Sheppard has been so fortunate to have Ian Diaz join our Special Needs staff and be willing to offer his coaching skills to our Tbird Soccer program and as the newly appointed technical director of the Ross Shep Women's Soccer Academy. He also is a celebrated player having been a player on the Canada’s Men’s National Beach Soccer going to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has recently played for the Edmonton Scottish and Varsity Green & Gold, both Alberta Major League teams.  Mr. Diaz also plays professionally as mid-fielder with the winning Edmonton Drillers, Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League 2007-08 champions!  He was chosen in 2005 as the coach of the elite U15 Girls Edmonton Force Super Y team. Mr. Diaz just got back this October from the Canadian Youth Soccer Nationals with his U18 Girls West Raiders team.

Coach Judy Nicolas...

Ms. Nicolas joins the team bringing with her experience and wisdom of working with young people. Her work and background with our Learning Strategies program makes her familiar with interpersonal relationships and she is sure to contribute to the spirit and dynamic of the team. (Photo to come!)

Manager/Photographer Denis Chalifoux...

I'm the team manager / teacher sponsor / photographer for the Indoor Soccer season.  Although I've taught Physics, Science and Math at Shep for over 33 years, I have developed and interest in "futball" through the passion of my son for the sport. With my science background I have acquired a unique perspective on the techniques and skills of soccer.   I've also co-ordinated / managed a number of club teams and dealt with arranging tournaments. I do NOT make decisions as to who gets on the team or coaching, but I am involved with communication, student behavior, discipline and act as an observer of player/coach relations, take photos, update the webpage and hustle the team on and off buses!  I also see myself as a buffer or as a "safe" person for the players to "vent" their anger or frustration rather than do so in front of the team and/or coach.  In this way, I can discuss matters with the coach and athlete AFTER things have calmed down... bringing them together hopefully with much better outcomes and understanding.

RainOut Lines...

RULE... unless you hear from a coach or the manager that a game has been cancelled or rained out, the ONLY reason not to show up is if the fields are officially closed according to the online announcement for Edmonton (after the 4:00PM update), or telephone the proper area. Otherwise show up at the field regardless of the weather.... or else we default the game!
